Front-End Engineer

DuckDuckGo | Remote

Apply

DuckDuckGo is actively looking for a Front-end Engineer to join our Search team. We need you to help us build a search engine that respects user's privacy while delivering a uniquely compelling experience.

The Search team is responsible for the technology that powers DuckDuckGo.com. As an engineer working on the Search team you will help identify and close major gaps in the search engine currently preventing DuckDuckGo from achieving mainstream adoption. All engineers on the Search team are empowered to solve problems from start to finish. We're looking for engineers that want autonomy and are capable of taking vague problems, scoping them into high impact projects and working with others to implement solutions that measurably improve the product. These projects include things like resolving tricky UX issues on the SERP, measuring and improving search quality across different countries/languages, or building out missing features and functionality in our Instant Answers.

Since most of our staff works remote, this position requires that you have strong written/verbal skills and the ability to get things done working on your own.

Your Role:

  • Lead the development of front-end engineering projects on DuckDuckGo.com. This includes managing the project, working collaboratively with others to get help where you need it, and validating that the project is moving the product in the right direction.

  • Take responsibility for solving major product issues, from initial scoping through implementation.

  • Own major features of the SERP and take responsibility for their maintenance and improvement over time.

  • Collaborate with peers on product brainstorms, technical design discussions, pair programming sessions and code reviews.

  • Write pragmatic, testable code that works consistently across all permutations of settings, devices and browsers.
  • Technical requirements:

  • Experience working on at least one large front-end application

  • Familiarity with MVC/MVVM concepts and how they apply to JS applications

  • Comfortable working with the many different libraries and components on the front-end. This includes things like compiled CSS (we use SASS), compiled templates (we use Handlebars), build tools (we use Grunt) and automated testing tools (we use Jasmine, Phantom and Casper)
  • Nice to haves:

  • UI/UX/Design experience

  • Backend engineering experience or familiarity with Perl

  • Familiarity or experience with DuckDuckHack
  • Please see https://duck.co/help/company/hiring for general details about DuckDuckGo hiring and how to apply for positions.
